FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should my pet have an exam and blood work?

The age and overall health of an animal normally determines how often they are seen at Briarwood Animal Hospital. Young puppies and kittens are recommended to be seen yearly after they have received their initial vaccinations and have been spayed or neutered. Adult pets are normally seen for yearly exams, with blood work completed as need. Senior animals may be recommended to come in twice yearly, while bloodwork is recommended each year after they are geriatric.

Why does my pet need a dental procedure?

Dental care is one of the cornerstones of a healthy pet, allowing them to live longer than animals without regular dental care. Affected pets constantly swallow bacteria in the mouth that has hardened into tartar and plaque. These bacteria ultimately damage their liver, kidneys, and heart. The experienced veterinarians at Briarwood Animal Hospital will care for your pet’s oral health, whether they are young or if they are facing their first dental exam later in their lives.

What if my pet has an after-hours problem?

Briarwood Animal Hospital does not have staff available for emergencies after hours, and refer our clients to the Animal Emergency and Referral Center. They can be reached by telephone at 601-939-8999, and is located at 1009 Treetops Boulevard, Flowood, MS 39232.

At what age should my pet be spayed or neutered?

The experienced veterinarians at Briarwood Animal Hospital recommend spaying or neutering all pets not used for breeding between four and six months of age. Spaying and neutering our pet companions not only prevents unwanted litters, it can also reduce the risk of cancer in the reproductive system later in life. Please contact one of our caring staff members at 601-956-5030 and schedule an appointment to have your pet spayed or neutered today!

What are heartworms, and how can I prevent my pet from getting them?

Adult heartworms can grow to be twelve inches long that typically infect the heart and lungs of both dogs and cats. These worms can cause permanent damage to the host, and can be fatal if left untreated. Prevention of heartworm disease is always more effective and less expensive than treating them after they have infected your precious pet. Briarwood Animal Hospital has a complete pharmacy within our clinic with different types of heartworm preventatives including oral medications, topically-applied products, and an injectable preventative. Have your constant companion protected against this deadly disease by scheduling an appointment at Briarwood Animal Hospital today.

What financing options do you offer, or is payment expected at the time of service?

Payment is expected at the time of service, and Briarwood Animal Hospital accepts cash and major credit cards. If your pet has an unexpected injury or health issue, Briarwood also accepts Care Credit, which can provide veterinary financing upon your acceptance. Care Credit can be reached at-1-800-677-0718 or you can apply online at https://www.carecredit.com/vetmed/.
